Seasonal Variation in Nitrate Removal Mechanisms in Coastal Stormwater Ponds

چکیده

Stormwater wet ponds (SWPs) are engineered structures used to collect and retain stormwater runoff from developed areas. SWPs generally regarded as important nitrogen (N) sinks, but seasonal variation in SWP N cycling that influences pond removal has not been characterized. To inform function across seasons, we sampled the sediments water columns of three southeastern US coastal plain measured gas nutrient fluxes sediment-water interface during ambient conditions nitrate (NO3)-enriched “simulated storm” conditions. Dissolved organic (DON) was dominant form dissolved column, while + nitrite (NOx) typically below detection. sediment matter properties varied by study site had minimal impact on processes or estimated NO3 fate. functioned TN sinks NO3-enriched conditions, fate based temperature, DON concentrations, O2 uptake. These results suggest permanent (denitrification) varies seasonally, with retention NOx becoming more hotter when uptake is largest. Low concentrations rapid can host reduced may promote over denitrification. Additional research needed determine retained how might downstream quality.

Stormwater Treatment Areas: Experiences with Nitrate Removal

Inorganic nitrogen is commonly found in three different forms: Ammonia (NH4), nitrite (NO2), and nitrate (NO3). Ammonia is a principle form of nitrogen found in urban wastewater and runoff especially from pastures and feedlots. According to Kadlec and Knight (1996), ammonia, or ammonium nitrogen, is the preferred nutrient form for most wetland plants because of its importance in plant growth. A...

Engineered bioretention for removal of nitrate from stormwater runoff.

A bioretention unit is a simple, plant- and soil-based, low-impact treatment and infiltration facility for treating stormwater runoff in developed areas. Nitrate, however, is not attenuated in conventional bioretention facilities. Thus, this study systematically evaluated a reengineered concept of bioretention for nitrate removal via microbial denitrification, which incorporates a continuously ...

Use of Functionalized Filter Media for Nutrient Removal in Stormwater Ponds

Many best-management practices (BMPs) currently used in urban regions have been developed to minimize flood risk, sustain downstream ecosystems, and secure the quality of groundwater sources either directly or indirectly. One such BMP is the reuse of stormwater by removing nutrients from the nutrient-laden “first flush” water collected in wet or dry ponds; this practice has led to the developme...

Seasonal variation in nitrification and nitrate- reduction pathways in coastal sediments in the Gulf of Finland, Baltic Sea

The Baltic Sea is one of the most eutrophic marine areas in the world. The role of nitrogen as a eutrophicating nutrient in the Baltic Sea has remained controversial owing to a lack of understanding of nitrogen cycling in the area. We investigated the seasonal variation in sediment nitrification, denitrification, anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox), and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to amm...

The Hydraulic Efficiency of Simple Stormwater Ponds

This paper investigates the hydrodynamic characteristics of nine stormwater pond configurations. These ponds represent an extension of earlier work by Persson (1999) who proposed the thirteen pond configurations currently used as a guide in the hydrodynamic component of the Cooperative Research Centre for Catchment Hydrology (CRCCH) Model for Urban Stormwater Improvement Conceptualisation (MUSI...
